The National Health Service turned 70 on 5 July 2018. The milestone is the perfect opportunity to celebrate the achievements of one of the nation’s most loved institutions, to appreciate the vital role the service plays in our lives, and to recognise and thank the extraordinary NHS staff – the everyday heroes – who are there to guide, support and care for us, day in, day out.

Then and now

This fascinating infographic - Changes in our health over 70 years - compiled by the Public Health team at Surrey County Council shows some of the amazing progress the National Health Service has made in Surrey over the course of seven decades.

Everyday heroes

Here we tell the stories of a few NHS workers, service users and volunteers; people who have experienced life on the health and social care front line and ‘behind the scenes’; people who each make invaluable contributions to our local health economy that you wouldn’t ordinarily be aware of.
