Surrey Downs CCG has worked with local patients and consultants to develop a range of community eye care services which will enable High Street opticians to identify and, in some cases, treat or monitor eye conditions. Conditions which cannot be treated or monitored by a High Street optician can be referred directly into specialist services for treatment.


Minor Eye Conditions Service (MECS)


Minor eye service - This new service covers the following conditions; red eye or eyelids, dry eye or gritty/uncomfortable eyes, inflammation and irritation of the eye, significant sticky discharge from the eye or watery eye, recently occurring flashes and floaters, ingrowing eyelashes, recent and sudden reduced vision, foreign body in the eye, eye pain and excessive tears. Primary Eyecare Assessment and Referral Service (PEARS)

Under this service a number of local high street opticians will identify and refer patients with suspected cataracts, wet age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and glaucoma on to specialist services:

  • Direct Pre-Operative Cataract Referral – This service enables opticians to identify possible cataracts in patients during their routine eye test. The optician will complete an additional assessment to see if cataract surgery is appropriate. If so, the optician will explain what the surgery would involve and the patient can then choose where to have it done.
  • Suspected Wet Age-related Macular Degeneration (AMD) Referral – This service helps high street opticians identify suspected wet AMD in patients during their routine eye test. By urgently referring patients directly to a hospital or community clinic, further tests can be carried out and treatment can be started within two weeks if necessary. 
  • Glaucoma Repeat Reading Service – Under this new service, high street opticians will repeat pressure readings for patients identified with high intraocular pressure or suspect visual fields during their routine eye test. If the eye pressure remains high and visual fields are still affected at the second appointment, patients will be referred directly to a hospital or community eye clinic for further tests.

Stable Glaucoma Monitoring (SGM) Service

We have launched a community service to support people who have glaucoma, where the condition is now stable. If your care is being transferred into this new community service your consultant will write to you to let you know this is going to happen, they will also give you details about where you can choose to be seen for your appointments in future (please click pdf here (7 KB)  for a list of where you can choose to be seen).
